Split vs. Window/Wall Air Conditioning
We receive calls daily from homeowners looking for more information about which type of system is best for their needs. Since there is a lot to consider when looking for a cooling we have put together some easy to understand information to help you with your choice.
The Hardware
A Window or Wall air conditioner (AC) is usually a cube-shaped unit that contains a condenser, compressor, expansion valve and other components. As the names suggest, window ACs are installed in a window and wall ACs are installed through a large opening in an exterior wall. Both require support structures on the exterior of the home.
Split Units are named because the outdoor unit, which contains the condenser and compressor, is separated from the indoor unit that provides the cooling, air filter and air return. Split AC Indoor units can be mounted on either exterior or interior walls, the floor or the ceiling.
The Home – Construction Materials & Layout
Your choice of air conditioner may be limited by the way your home is built.
What materials are your exterior walls made of? If you have CMU (concrete block) or concrete walls, wall units may not be an option. Window units require windows large enough to accommodate the air conditioner. Split air conditioners can be mounted to any type of wall.
Where in the home do you want air conditioning? Window and Wall units must be installed through an exterior wall so hot air can be exhausted to the outdoors. Split units, on the other hand, can be located almost anywhere in the home because the internal unit is separated from the external unit. Split units can accommodate ceiling, wall or floor installation.
All air conditioning units need space around them in order to function properly. Most people install window units where there is an existing window. However, those locations may not provide enough clearance around the air conditioner for ventilation. Outdoor split units, on the other hand, can be placed any distance you want from the interior unit, so you can ensure that it has adequate ventilation.
Ease of Installation and Aesthetics
Split AC units require a 3-inch hole to pass through the piping and connect the inside unit to the outside unit. This hole is covered by the inside unit making for an aesthetically pleasing installation. Exterior piping is covered by a molding and can be painted to match the exterior of the home.
Window units are installed in an existing window and usually require exterior support brackets for the unit, reducing natural light and views to the outdoors. Wall units require an opening in the wall large enough to fit the air conditioner. Wall units are meant to be permanent. If you ever decide to replace or resize that unit, you will be left with framing, drywall and painting to cover up the existing hole.
Noise
Window and wall units run at approximately 61 decibels. It is relatively noisy because all components are contained within the unit. The condenser and compressor are located just inches from the exterior wall. Because they are hung on the wall with supports, window units can cause a slight rattling or humming effect from the wall itself.
Split AC units operate at a lower volume (19 decibels) because the condenser and compressor are located in the outdoor unit which is typically mounted on a pad. The outdoor unit can be installed long distances away from the inside unit to ensure even quieter operation.
Efficiency
Split Systems are known for their “smart” operation by optimizing the temperature in your space to take control of your comfort and energy consumption. This is done using self-adjusting inverter-driven compressor technology. Being able to sense temperature changes both inside and outside the home, a split system will use the least amount of energy to cool your home, saving about 35% electricity versus a window unit. Once the desired temperature is met, the smart technology will go into an “idle” stage, waiting for the slightest change in temperature to begin again.
Window Units are typically known to operate in either an “on or off” setting. This requires a lot of energy to cool a room to a specific temperature. Many times, once the temperature is met, the window unit continues to be “on” without the ability to cycle down, requiring it to be manually turned off.
